Second Alphas Released for Some Ubuntu Derivatives
Some Ubuntu derivatives saw their second alpha release today for the upcoming 13.10 release, codenamed “Saucy Salamander”. Here’s a look at some of the improvements included in the latest alpha:
Kubuntu
- KDE Upgraded to 4.11 RC 1
- Includes Muon Discover (an application browser and installer)
Lubuntu
- Chromium browser has been replaced by Firefox.
- XScreensaver has been removed.
- ZRam has been added enabling the desktop installer to work on lower RAM machines.
- The new artwork has started to arrive incoming artwork.
Xubuntu
- Xubuntu is now shipping apt-offline in the default installation along with instructions on the documentation. This tools allows for easier access to package archives in bandwidth-constrained conditions as well as when a computer lacks an always-on connection to the Internet. Usage examples are part of the included documentation.
Ubuntu GNOME
- Most of GNOME 3.8 is now included. See the GNOME release notes for more details.
- The new GNOME Classic session is included. To try it, choose it from the Sessions option on the login screen.
- Ubuntu Online Accounts is no longer included by default (1040193). If you’d like to install it, install gnome-control-center-signon, evolution-data-server-uoa, and whichever of the account-plugin-* packages you want to use.
